Description

GW 494 Soy Wax Melt & Tart Wax is made for wickless home-fragrance projects such as wax melts, tarts, clamshell melts, and snap bars. It is formulated to release from molds more easily than standard container soy wax and helps create smooth, clean-looking melts.

This wax is not designed for jar candles, pillar candles, or wicked candles. Final results depend on your fragrance oil, dye, mold type, pour temperature, cooling conditions, and cure time.

Key Features
  • Soy-based wax for melts and tarts
  • Good choice for clamshells, snap bars, and small molds
  • Great mold release compared with soft container waxes
  • Helps reduce frosting and bloom
  • Good hot and cold throw potential
  • Flake form for easy weighing and melting
How to Use
  1. Melt wax until fully liquid.
  2. Add dye if desired and stir until fully blended.
  3. Add fragrance oil at your tested fragrance-add temperature.
  4. Stir slowly and evenly for about 1–2 minutes.
  5. Pour into clamshells, tart molds, or silicone molds.
  6. Allow melts to cool completely before removing from molds.
  7. Let melts cure before final scent testing.
Suggested starting point: heat wax to about 180–185°F, add fragrance around 180–185°F, and test pouring around 150–160°F. Adjust based on fragrance oil, dye amount, mold type, and room temperature.
Fragrance Testing

A common fragrance load range for GW 494 is 5–10%. Start lower during testing before pushing fragrance load higher. Too much fragrance oil can cause soft melts, sweating, poor mold release, or weak scent performance.

Because this is a wickless wax, wick testing does not apply. Instead, test melt firmness, mold release, cold throw, hot throw, fragrance load, dye amount, and warmer performance.

Do not use GW 494 for wicked candles. It is built for wax melts and tarts, not for stable candle burning.
Troubleshooting

Wax melts are sensitive to fragrance load, dye amount, mold type, room temperature, and cure time. Soft texture, sweating, frosting, bloom, weak scent throw, or poor mold release can happen if the formula is not balanced.

  • Soft melts: Lower fragrance load or allow more cure time before packaging.
  • Poor mold release: Let melts cool fully before removing and test a different pour temperature.
  • Sweating: Reduce fragrance load or test a different fragrance oil.
  • Frosting or bloom: Avoid rapid cooling and reduce temperature swings.
  • Weak scent throw: Test fragrance load, cure time, and warmer type.
  • Dull color: Test dye amount and make sure dye is fully dissolved before pouring.
Shipping & Storage

Store wax in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture, and strong odors.

During hot-weather shipping, wax flakes may soften or stick together. This usually does not damage the wax. Let the wax return to room temperature before weighing or melting.

Q & A

Is GW 494 beginner-friendly?
Yes. It is beginner-friendly for wax melts, tarts, clamshells, and snap bars. It is not beginner-friendly for candles because it is not made for wicked candles.

What is GW 494 best used for?
It is best used for wax melts, tarts, clamshell melts, snap bars, and molded wickless fragrance pieces.

Can I use GW 494 for jar candles?
No. GW 494 is not designed for wicked candles. For jar candles, use a container wax such as GB 464, GB 444, GB 454, C-3, IGI 6006, BB-S10, or BB-C83.

Can I use GW 494 for pillar candles?
No. It is a tart and melt wax, not a pillar wax. For pillars or molds, use a pillar wax such as BB-C35 or BB-P55.

Is GW 494 better than container soy wax for wax melts?
Usually yes. Container soy wax is often too soft and may not release cleanly from molds. GW 494 is made specifically for melts and tarts.

How much fragrance oil should I use?
A common working range is 5–10%. Start with a moderate load and test firmness, scent throw, and sweating before increasing.

Why are my wax melts sweating?
Sweating is often caused by too much fragrance oil, incompatible fragrance oil, warm storage, or not enough cure time. Lower the fragrance load and retest.

How long should wax melts cure?
Many makers allow wax melts to cure for several days before judging final scent throw. Some fragrance oils perform better after a longer cure.
