If you are new to candle making, do not start by buying random materials. Start with these five basics.

Wax type Determines texture, scent throw, hardness, adhesion, mold release, and burn style.
Wick size Controls flame height, melt pool, heat, soot, hot throw, and burn safety.
Fragrance load Affects scent strength, wax stability, sweating, smoking, and wick performance.
Pour temperature Helps reduce sinkholes, rough tops, frosting, cracking, and poor adhesion.
Container choice Jar diameter, depth, and glass thickness affect wick choice and heat buildup.
Test burning Confirms whether the candle is balanced, safe, and ready to repeat.

Simple Testing Workflow

This is the part beginners skip. That is why their results feel random. Do not change wax, wick, fragrance oil, dye, and container all at once.

Choose one wax and one container Do not test five waxes in five different jars at the same time.

Select 2–3 possible wick sizes Use a wick guide, then test one smaller, one suggested, and one larger.

Use a consistent fragrance load Start within the wax supplier’s recommended range.

Let the candle cure Give the wax and fragrance time to settle before judging hot throw.

Burn in 3–4 hour sessions Track flame height, melt pool, jar temperature, soot, mushrooming, and scent throw.

Change one variable only Change the wick, wax, fragrance, dye, or vessel one at a time so you know what caused the result.
