Before Lighting a Candle
Before lighting, check the candle, wick, container, and burn area. A few seconds of preparation can prevent uneven burning, overheating, soot, or unsafe flame behavior.
While the Candle Is Burning
Watch the flame, melt pool, container temperature, and nearby surroundings. A candle that looks good at first can still become unsafe later in the burn.

When to Stop Burning a Candle
Many candle problems happen near the end of the candle, when the remaining wax is low and the container can heat unevenly.
- Stop burning when about 1/2 inch of wax remains in a container candle.
- Stop earlier if the jar becomes too hot or the flame becomes unstable.
- Do not burn a candle all the way to the bottom of the container.
- Do not relight a candle with cracked glass, a loose wick, or heavy soot buildup.

If you make candles, safety starts with the formula. A candle can look beautiful and still burn poorly if the wax, wick, fragrance oil, dye, additive, or container is not properly tested.
